How to choose a domain name
As we deal with quite a few different domain names this question is usually asked by a customer.
Many would answer this question by putting their business name.
Your business name as your domain name is nice, but isn’t always the best way to go.
To illustrate this;
Story 1
One of my businesses was Computerised Business Management.
cbm.co.uk was available for over £3,000 and computerisedbusinessmanagement.co.uk was a bit long.
What was the solution to this?
When we looked into how customers reacted to our name we found that they either forgot our name or remembered us as CMB. We took the rather drastic act of renaming us to Smart FOX IT.
Story 2
We have a customer who is an opticians. They bought the name gwynnsopticians.co.uk
Although this would seem a good choice the person who they bought the domain name through held their name for ransom.
We found that gwynns.co.uk was available.
This name is shorter and easier to type that having gwynnsopticians.
The biggest problem to having your business name as your domain name is it being available.
How do you choose a domain name?
Step one.
Search for your business name.
If it isn’t available then search for your product or industry.
Example;
Your name is Acme Fixings
names available might be
acme.com, acmefixings.com, buyfixings.com, fixingstobuy.com
You should now have a list of available domain names.
Step 2
1. How long is it?
2. Can a customer (especially a new one) remember it and type it in easily?
3. Does it look silly? (for example. when you write your name as a domain name is there a hidden word that looks bad or funny? – Choose Spain -> ChoosesPain.com)
4. How hard is it to tell a customer over the phone? (double letters or different spellings)
Following these two steps can help with a memorable domain name that looks good.
A few other points to remember are;
Don’t use too many dashes EG. c-b-m.co.uk
Don’t pick other TLDs EG. .me, .org, .net unless you know what these mean – keep away from them.
TLDs or Top Level Domains are .com, .net, .biz etc.
CCTLDs are .co.uk, .net.uk etc.
If you can get a TLD name keep to .com
If you can get a CCTLD, keep to your country and .co or similar for your country.
I will write more about this again.

An end to 0870 numbers?
A few years ago I wanted one single number that all my customers could call and wouldn’t change if we relocated.
At the time a 0870 number seemed like a good idea.
The plan though worked too well. Our customers started using our 08700 110 854 and even though we haven’t officially used that number for over two years we are still getting 14 calls a month on it.
Unforunately we have to finally disconect our 08700 110 854 number due to changes from OFCOM.
If you want to contact us, we have many numbers that all come through to the same place.
0845 869 7983
029 2000 8165
01633 508444
Please feel free to update your records and let us know if the 08700110854 number is still listed somewhere.

What is in a page rank.
According to Google it doesn’t matter much to your position.
If you disagree and want to check your Google page rank then follow the link below which shows our google page rank. It was a rather dismal 2 whaen I posted this.
** UPDATE ** 17/06/2009
As you may note the page rank has gone down to 1.
This is probably due to my rather sparse posting.
I will once again try to post more often!
